first timers & beginners

Learning a new skill can be intimidating, and heading to the slopes for the first time is no different. However, King Pine makes the whole process much easier than the mega-resorts.

Here are a few tips for getting
started at King Pine:

What to Wear

The key to enjoying your first time skiing or riding is be comfortable, warm and dry. Dress in layers, including a base layer that wicks moisture away from your skin like polypropylene "long johns", a warm layer like fleece or wool, and an outer layer that protects you from moisture (snow, rain, etc.) and is wind resistant. There are many brands and materials available for your outer layer-- in many cases, the more you spend, the better the quality product.

Don't forget a warm hat, since the majority of the body's heat is lost through the head. Waterproof gloves or mittens are important to protect your hands from the elements. One pair of warm socks will do the trick, since doubling up on socks may restrict circulation, which may make your feet cold and uncomfortable.

Even though it may be cold, don't forget about the sun! Wear sunscreen, even if it is cloudy outside. Also, a good pair of sunglasses or goggles will make your day much more enjoyable, especially if it is snowing.

Where to Go

Once you have parked at the King Pine Base Lodge, gather up your belongings and head inside. The Lodge has cubbies and lockers where you can store your gear while you are on the mountain. We recommend that you use our coin-operated lockers, as King Pine is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Did you forget something? The Ice House Ski Shop has what you need! Sunscreen, goggles, gloves-- all the stuff that may not have made it into the car with you!

The Ticket and Rental Process

Head to the Guest Services desk to get your day started. Here, you can purchase your lift ticket, arrange for rental equipment and schedule a lesson. You will need a valid ID to rent equipment, and our knowledgeable, friendly rental shop staff are ready to answer your questions.

Take a Lesson

Whether it is your first time or your first time in a long time, we recommend that you take a lesson. Our PSIA-certified ski and snowboard school has dozens of fun, patient instructors who want nothing more than to see you having fun skiing and riding. Group lessons are available up to four times daily, and private classes are also available.

Hit the Slopes

There... you've done it! You have your gear, your lift ticket and your lessons are scheduled! King Pine's layout is easy to navigate, and trails are clearly marked. 80% of the mountain is appropriate for beginner and intermediate skiers and riders, so you can really get out and explore, even if you're a novice. Stop by guest services for a trail map, or take a look at the large maps at the top and bottom of the mountain. Have a great time!
